Meet the Top 10 Free iPhone Apps as per Apple

top 10 free iPhone apps

We all know now that iOS had been Candy Crush-ed last 2013. But other than this addicting game app, what other applications are included amongst the most downloaded in the year that was? In this post, we feature the top 10 free iPhone apps based on Apple’s list.

Candy Crush

Do refer to the previous post Candy Crush-ed 2013! for more details about this app.

YouTube

Along with Facebook, Pandora, Temple Run, and Instagram, YouTube is a returning champion from last year’s top 10. However, some apps were replaced this year including social media giants Twitter and Pinterest as well as top voice and chat application Skype. The YouTube app by the way will have you expect nothing different from the browser version except its petite design.

Temple Run 2

The original Temple Run game app was amongst 2012’s list of top 10 most downloaded apps in iTunes. Its second version makes it to the top 10 last 2013. Temple Run 2 offers more exciting obstacles, greater challenges, and a new overall design. Aside from this version, other versions which had also been released include Temple Run Brave and Temple Run Oz, both of which were designed exclusively for Disney and the animated movies that inspired them.

Temple Run features a chosen character which continuously flees from pursuing demon monkeys after stealing their worshipped idol statue while constantly evading hurdles along the way by running, jumping, and gliding.

Vine

Twitter not making it to the list this year can be attributed to the fact that their marketing efforts had been channeled towards Vine, an app they acquired around October 2012 which enables app users to post short video clips through social network sites like Twitter of course and even Facebook.

Google Maps

Even Apple’s own maps product (which ended up a disaster anyway) is no match for Google’s mapping service.

Snapchat

Snapchat allows users to send photos and videos enhanced with text and drawings to selected recipients. The items sent are called “snaps”, hence, the app’s name.

Instagram

Still a predominant social network and video plus photo sharing site, Instagram’s app is still one of the most downloaded to date. Facebook acquired this service in April 2012. Initially, only photos can be shared but in June 2013, Instagram introduced the capability to post videos lasting for up to 15 seconds. This move can be deemed as Facebook’s attempt to compete with Twitter’s video sharing app, Vine.

Facebook

Still the top social network site in the planet, Facebook records about 1.15 billion active monthly users worldwide as of this month, January 2014.

Pandora Radio

Pandora Radio is still the same old Internet radio, Pandora which allows users to play customized music according to their musical preferences.

Despicable Me: Minion Rush

Last year’s release of the movie sequel to the hit animated film Despicable Me may have encouraged increased sales for its mobile action app game. Play with Dave, one of the minions and complete fast paced challenges using power-ups, technique, or plain old Lady Luck in order to earn titles and customize your minion. You may also purchase other minion characters.

What is Candy Crush?

There’s hardly anyone who doesn’t know about this app yet especially for Facebook users and those who own either Android or iOS gadgets. But in case there’s still someone not in the know, Candy Crush is a game app developed by game development company, King, and was first released as a Facebook application on April 12, 2012 and later on introduced for smart phones and tablets (iOS) on November 14, 2012 and on December 14, 2012 for Android. The game records over 46 million monthly users and had already been downloaded and installed by over 500 million users across all platforms as of November 2013.

Game Mechanics

This video game is based on a match three puzzle concept where users match three or more similar candies in order to free them up and advance towards the next game level. To move the candies, players just have to swipe the items either horizontally or vertically. Candies include the red jelly bean, the orange lozenge, the yellow lemon drop, the green square, the blue lollipop head, and the purple cluster. There are also special candies which produce a certain effect when combined against each other or with regular candies. Some special candies include striped candies, wrapped candies, and colour bombs.

Candy Colours

Special candies are produced when over three similar coloured candies are matched. The colour bomb or brown rounded candy appears when five similar coloured candies are combined together. Horizontal or vertical striped candy is produced with four similar candies. Wrapped candy, one which is wrapped in a special coloured packaging is formed when a player clears five candies by forming the letters “T” or “L.”

Colour Combinations

The effects special candies produce include clearing an entire row or column. Combining two special candies produce greater effects than when used by themselves. For example, two colour bombs clear all candies on the puzzle board. Two striped candies on the other hand will create a blast which simultaneously clears both horizontal and vertical rows. Wrapped candies switched will result to a double 8×8 explosion. Meanwhile, a colour bomb with a striped candy transforms similar coloured candies into striped ones and clears rows (horizontal or vertical). A wrapped candy switched with a striped candy produces a large candy which absorbs everything in a 3×3 square and consequently clears out three horizontal and vertical rows. A colour bomb switched with a wrapped candy detonates candies similar to the colour of the wrapped candy. A random colour will detonate again once the board cools down.

Characters

  • Tiffi or short for Toffette is the blonde girl with pigtails who is also the main character. She is introduced in the first episode (Candy Town) and appears throughout the game through tutorials, level introductions, and helps solve player’s problems.
  • Mr. Toffee is the tall man with orange hair and introduces gamers to the Candy Crush Saga through a tutorial and power up tips.
  • Easter Bunny introduces Candy order levels.

Lives

Players are given five lives which are reduced every time they fail a level. A player needs at least one life to play. Once the lives are depleted, one needs to wait for at least 30 minutes for a life to regenerate. They can also ask Facebook friends for extra lives or purchase more through Facebook credits or money paid via credit card.

Levels

Game progress can be achieved by completing each level which can be through target scores, jelly, dropping ingredients, time, and candy order. Each level has a corresponding episode. As per Wikipedia, the Facebook version has 515 levels while the Candy Crush Saga version (for phones and tablets) has 485.

Most levels are playable only after unlocking the succeeding episodes. Upon clearing level 35, players are required to unlock the subsequent levels. The same follows for every 15 levels thereafter. Levels can be unlocked by paying or through the help of Facebook friends. On the phone and tablet version, most levels are unlocked after every three levels completed but only when not connected to Facebook. After logging online, the progress is synced between the downloaded app and the Facebook app. There are also instances where a player must wait for 24 hours before playing the next quest.

Dreamworld

Dreamworld, with 65 levels as of January 7, 2014, was introduced on November 27, 2013 where Tiffi was flown by an owl named Odus to this land after she fell into deep sleep after getting tiresome helping mascots.

Obstacles

Obstacles are present throughout all levels to add more challenge for players. Some obstacles include the chocolate, candy bombs, tornadoes, chocolate spawners or fountains, mystery candy, marmalade, meringue, chameleon candies, licorice swirls, and many more.

  • Chocolate attempts to slowly fill the game board.
  • Candy bombs on the other hand require players to get the same colour (three in a row) before the special timer reaches zero, initiating a bomb to explode and ending the game.
  • Tornadoes destroy random spaces on the board.
  • Chocolate spawners or chocolate fountains create chocolates and swallow any candy within its reach. A chocolate is created for every move lest the players break them during a switch.
  • Mystery Candy features regular colours but are elliptical shaped with a question mark and provide special candies, boosters, or obstacles.

Boosters and Charms

Boosters help players through a game level and can be earned through a game or purchased, although most levels can be cleared just by employing the right strategy. Players are nonetheless encouraged to purchase these during difficult levels. Some boosters are as follows:

  • Lollipop Hammer – destroys game board squares
  • Free Switch – swaps adjacent candies
  • Jelly Fish – targets three candies at one use
  • Coconut Wheel – clears all candies in its path

Charms are more expensive than boosters and can be utilized to purchase additional lives.

Cheating?

There are additional techniques (which we don’t encourage) which can be used when playing the game. They can be considered cheating in a way. 🙂 One of which include advancing the device’s time and date in order for the game to detect that 24 hours have already passed, thereby, enabling the player to continue playing the app without having to wait for a full 24 hours (see levels section).

Candy Crush 2

So far, there had been no news of any sequel to this game.

Merry Christmas 2013 and Happy New Year 2014

We’ve fixed a lot of iPods, iPhones and iPads this year. Now it’s time for some Christmas cheer.

Each year my family puts out Christmas lights. Over the years our display grew very large. The kids decided to sync the lights to music 3 years ago, and it’s become a tradition now, to enjoy the lights and record a video of our efforts. It brings the whole family together to help build something that gives enjoyment not only to us but the community around us.

This year there are 4,200 LED lights across 42 channels (sets of lights) and were programmed to one of our favourite Christmas songs (and movies), “Mr Grinch” – by the Whirling Dervishes.

Best wishes for your holiday season, and take care.

Will Apple Surprise us again through the iPhone 6?

iphone 6

If the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were surprising enough in their respective worlds, what’s going to be different with the upcoming iPhone 6 supposedly to be released next year (2014)?

As always, we can only speculate based on rumours circulating all over tech sites; and based on what we think we know according to what others believe they know too, here are what to expect with the yet to be launched iPhone 6.

Release Date

Based on the history of previous releases which often falls during the last quarter of the year, we can assume that the iPhone 6 will be released around September of next year. Otherwise, it may be around June where other important Apple announcements are made.

Design

Due to the innovation present with the plastic and smaller iPhone 5c which was intended to wage war with cheap Android devices, we just might see potentially larger iPhones which may well battle it all out against phablet (phone + tablet) gadgets. There are also rumours of multiple iPhones to be allegedly released next year including the iPhone Math or iPhone+ which may potentially be units with larger than usual screens ranging between 4.7 to 5.7 inches all the way up to 6 inches which is rather oddly too large. The iPhone 6 is supposedly being tested with a 4.9 inches screen according to an insider scoop from China’s CTech. Most sites resort to Chinese sources anyway since Apple’s units are often assembled in this side of the East.

Most also agree that the next iPhone version may be curved or even bendable/flexible featuring unbreakable OLED panels, following Samsung’s footsteps.

If this sounds too farfetched, wait till you hear about liquidmetal. It’s made from an alloy of titanium, nickel, copper, and zirconium plus a number of other metals. The end product will make any casing light, scratch resistant and tough. Apple had been working with Liquidmetal Technologies since 2010 and recently with GT Advanced Technologies. The latter is a frontrunner in researching and testing the potential of sapphire crystal for mobile phones.

Screen

Several Android phones possess 1080p full HD screen resolution. The iPhone shouldn’t be anywhere behind the race. High resolution screen can be possible through the retina and Sharp IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) display.

What about 3D? With 3D slowly becoming a household name through various devices such as TV and even in some phones as well as over the web (like YouTube 3D), iPhone may soon adapt this feature but no one can tell whether it will be through the iPhone 6.

Storage

iPad already boasts of as much as 128GB storage space, so why not apply the same feature in an iPhone, in this case, the forthcoming iPhone 6?

NFC

It should be just about time for NFC technology to be present in iPhones since several Android phones already have it in effect.

Finger Scanning

Speaking of technology, the 6th iPhone may probably feature Apple’s finger print touch ID scanning which is already available in the 5s.

iOS8

If the 5c was considered a flop by many as much as the iOS7 caused all too many issues and may soon be forgotten, I’m betting on a new operating system, the iOS8.

Processor

How about an improved A7 processor or an all new A8? We will soon find out.

Camera

Some suggests the release of a 13MP camera with a motion technology that’s photographer friendly.

Gaming Ready

With several gamer friendly phone units in the market these days, will Apple join the bandwagon? Apple’s recent acquisition of PrimeSense, a chipmaker from Israel developing 3D sensor technology for appliances and mobile gadgets, may pave the way for gaming technology in phones similar to what the Xbox’s Kinect controller can accomplish.

Wireless Charging

Apple has pretty much filed patent for everything thinkable when it comes to mobile tech including wireless charging. It’s doubtfully going to be possible anytime soon but who knows if we’ll see it in the next iPhone model?

Finished Product

With all too many rumours and speculations, we are yet to find out whether the iPhone 6 becomes a phablet, a curved phone, or simply with a larger screen. See you next year when it’s unveiled so we can review these notes and find out which predictions had been realised.
